The Restoration
The desk underwent structural inspection and conservative restoration to address joint movement and surface dehydration.
Original hand-fitted joinery was retained, with core joints reinforced and stabilised through traditional structural clamping and mechanical alignment. Micro-abrasions were addressed, and the solid Kiaat surface was cleaned, resealed, and hand-polished to preserve the wood's natural grain patterns.
The Material
The desk is constructed from mature South African Kiaat (Pterocarpus angolensis), valued for the subtle figure and natural tone variations across its boards.
The grain shifts from golden amber to deep warm brown in varying light. The scale and material quality reflect furniture made from decades-old solid timber, presenting a character not readily replicated in modern mass production.
The Record
Treatment was completed in April 2026 and documented under reference THE-KED-0058.
The record covers the structural stabilisation, surface cleaning, and resealing treatment undertaken by The Heritage Edit to preserve the desk for continued use.
Care & Stewardship
Guidelines for preserving the hand-polished finish and solid Kiaat timber of this piece.
01. The Timber
Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth. Avoid silicone-based furniture sprays or aggressive polishes that build up on natural timber.
02. The Finish
Cleaned, resealed and hand-polished. Liquid spills should be blotted immediately with a dry cloth to protect the surface sealed layer.
03. The Environment
Position away from direct prolonged heat sources, active air currents, and severe moisture fluctuations. Should structural movement develop, seek professional conservation advice.
