The Restoration
The chest arrived obscured beneath multiple non-original paint layers. The core structural integrity was sound throughout, and the original timber had been waiting beneath the surface for some time.
All non-original paint was removed using chemical-free methods. The solid oak carcass was then hand-finished to restore its natural moisture barrier, revealing the characteristic honey-oak grain beneath.
Non-period mirror mounts had previously been fitted to the chest. These were removed, and the resulting areas addressed using traditional dowel-plug restorative carpentry. The irreparably damaged original hardware was replaced with period-accurate salvaged pieces, selected to be sympathetic to the chest's original silhouette and era.

The Timber
Solid oak of this density is not a material of the present market. The chest carries the structural and aesthetic qualities of decades-old timber: a close, consistent grain, dense carcass construction and dovetail joinery that required no reinforcement during treatment.
The honey-oak character now visible across the piece is the natural result of the wood's age, not an applied colour. It is a surface that deepens with time and responds to thoughtful care.
The Record
The conservation was completed in November 2025 and documented under reference THE-SOC-0014.
The record covers the chest's initial condition, all treatments undertaken, the hardware replacement rationale, and the methods used to address the dowel-plug repairs following removal of the non-period mirror mounts.
Care & Stewardship
Simple guidelines to preserve the hand-finished solid oak and period-accurate hardware of this piece.
01. The Timber
Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth. Apply a high-quality furniture polish or natural wax every three to six months to nourish the timber and maintain the honey-oak character. Avoid abrasive cleaners and strong household chemicals.
02. The Drawers
If drawer movement becomes stiff, a small amount of beeswax applied to the solid-wood runners will restore smooth operation without damaging the joinery. Avoid synthetic lubricants near original timber surfaces.
03. The Environment
Avoid placing the chest in prolonged direct sunlight, near significant heat sources, or in conditions of sustained damp. As a natural material, solid oak responds to changes in humidity; moderate, stable conditions will preserve the finish longest.
